Quality of Life

Quality of life generally means how you feel about your life, your day-to-day experiences, your sense of control over your life and your outlook on your future. Basically, it involves the meaning you find in life, which can be derived in many ways and is personal to you.

One way to help improve your quality of life is through technology. Technology helps us stay engaged if we want to explore in the world or in our communities. Technology also allows to stay involved if we cannot go out and explore or we do not choose to do so. AARP has set up online communities to connect seniors to others. You can learn more about technology in the technology resource section on this website.

Being positive about life in general is associated with healthier living. Another way to maintain a good quality of life is by staying active. Read on for other ideas to help maintain a positive quality of life.

Travel

There is a saying that travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. Traveling, if you can, helps lower stress and keeps you active and involved.

There are many resources and travel opportunities for older individuals. AARP has a travel center that can help seniors review opportunities and book travel.

Rick Steves’ Europe is another online travel resource to look at that includes tips for seniors travelers.

Volunteering

Like other activities, volunteering helps you keep your mind sharp, helps keep you physically active and helps decrease isolation and depression. The most common types of volunteer work are:

  • Collecting, serving, preparing or distributing food
  • Fundraising or selling items to raise money
  • Engaging in general labor, like helping build homes or clean up parks
  • Tutoring or teaching
  • Mentoring youth
  • Collecting, making or distributing clothing
AARP provides a search engine that helps you look for volunteer opportunities in your community.

Hobbies

Hobbies are good for both your mental and physical health. They help keep your mind sharp and boost your mood.

AARP has some suggestions for a few ways to discover potential hobbies that interest you:

  • Sign up for a class at your local community college, continuing education, community center or through online courses.
  • Go along with friends as they enjoy their hobbies, whether it is hiking, bowling, going to car shows or anything in between.
  • Join a local club or group. Meetup is one way to find groups organized around certain hobbies.
  • Try volunteering as many hobbies involve an activity you enjoy and giving back, such as being a mentor or a volunteer coach.
  • If you want to combine family time with a hobby, see what other family members are up to.
